This is Com Pac Yacht’s 2003 version of a down east catboat based loosely on the Halsey Herschoff “America” design, but modified significantly. It’s an uncommon boat in the Northwest. Unlike the traditional model, the retractable centerboard is tucked into a slot in the ballast keel so it doesn’t intrude into the cabin. The rudder is a kick up high aspect design rather than a “barn door” affair. The rig uses aluminum spars and the mast can be raised and lowered from the cockpit, making it one of the easiest trailerable boats to rig at the launch ramp.
I found this boat in Florida in 2023 where it had sat on it’s trailer unused for a couple years because of an owner’s illness. The owner, a Cape Cod native, had purchased the boat from the first owner who had sailed it on fresh water in upstate New York. I had it transported to Olympia where I cleaned it up and made some small modifications and repairs including:
- The conventional shaft log was replaced with a PSS dripless shaft log.
- I added an engine cooling water bypass to permit the engine to be flushed with freshwater after each use.
- I removed the porta-potti enclosure in the cabin as unnecesarily fussy.
- I replaced the deteriorated cabin sole.
- I rebedded the four portlights and the forward hatch to eliminate leaks.
- I replaced the boom gallows.
- The original sail was damaged from improper storage so was replaced in 2024.
- I replaced the cabin cushions foam inserts in 2024.
- I replaced the damaged Yanmar engine control panel.
- The double axle trailer was substantially rebuilt professionally in Olympia in 2024 ($4,000) and is in essentially new condition.
Steering of the transom mounted rudder is using a varnished ships wheel. Depth and knotmeter instrument is located next to the helm as well as 12 volt outlets for powering a chartplotter or other devices. The engine is a Yanmar 1GM10, single cyclinder 10 hp seawater cooled diesel. There is no engine hour meter so I can only estimate the engine hours but believe it to be relatively modest for a boat of this age particularly since the second owner rarely used it because of poor health.
The sail is gaff rigged and was new in 2024. The peak, throat halyards and downhaul run through clutches mounted to the cabin top at the cockpit.
This boat has been daysailed from it’s slip at Swantown Marina in Olympia for the last 3 years. I’ve taken it on two Salish 100 cruises from Olympia to Port Townsend in 2024 and 2025. Both the boat and trailer have current registration in the State of Washington.
